The word "modem" is derived from modulator-demodulator, a modem is a device that modulates (or imposes) a digital signal onto an analogue carrier frequency waveform. An example of modulation being used is a home ADSL, DSL or PSTN internet connection, where the digital information is the internet traffic that you generate, this is modulated onto an analogue signal to carry the data over copper or fibre optic cables running under your road to the closest network exchange cabinet - where it goes on to be routed across the world wide web. This modulation process is necessary because digital signals do not efficiently travel across long distances, to travel along long runs of copper/fibre they need to be carried by an analogue signal which is capable of greater distances.
A router is a networking device that forwards packets of data between differently networks - routing. Quite often, routers have an integrated modem to provide routing between different types of network, such as between and an ADSL-based wide area network (WAN) and an Ethernet-based local area network (LAN). They are available with various levels of sophistication, the simplest devices are often referred to as gateways. They are used for applications such as remote access, remote machine diagnosis, predictive maintenance, remote device alarm notification, SCADA applications, remote metering , accessing serial devices and SNMP management.
