The client company is a large national concern, involved with safety critical applications and operates on a 24/7 basis. Safety is their first and foremost priority, whilst always aiming to provide a service in an efficient and cost-effective way.
The requirement and the solution
The client is installing a new control centre with requirements to provide data entry and readout positions for their staff to carry out their duties. The new centre is connected with processing equipment in various parts of the UK.
Because of the safety critical nature of the client’s business, each user position needs multiple paths to the processing equipment to meet the availability requirements; some of this equipment is located on remote sites.
The user positions have RS-232 interfaces, but are located outside RS-232 range of the network equipment. As a result line drives are needed.
The solution was to use Moxa NPort 6150 and NPort 6650-16 Secure Serial to Ethernet Device Servers, GarrettCom S14H-I Convenience Industrial Ethernet switches and GarrettCom 4K24CR Industrial Ethernet Switches to provide dual path connections via a public service network to central processing equipment on remote sites.

Amplicon provided consultancy and advice that helped identify products for implementation. They also offered competitive prices and delivered items within the required timescales.
Here one instance of a user position is shown below. The main data processing cluster is located in a central data processing centre and is connected to terminals in remote locations via a diverse X.25 network. Each terminal needs two independent routes to the central processor. In the event that a network path fails, the central processor will automatically re-route using the back-up path. The distance between the terminal and the networking equipment at the remote centres can be up to 140 meters (RS-232 is just 15 meters approx).
