Variable Message Signs Amplicon

Variable Message Signs (VMS) need to be strategically located around highways to provide drivers with critical information relating to their journey. Like cameras, their location cannot always be dictated by easily available power sources or existing enclosures – the priority is to communicate a clear message to all road-users.

Because of this, Amplicon are often called upon to provide a communications solution for the placement of VMS signs.

VMS SOLUTIONS Amplicon

Ethernet Extenders
These little known products can provide an excellent, cost-effective alternative to fibre especially in temporary locations. Ethernet Extenders can transmit Ethernet up to 10km (far exceeding the usual 100m limit) using just a SINGLE twisted-pair of low grade copper wires. This means an existing run of telephone wire or RS485 cable can be used to achieve high bandwidth Ethernet without the need to install CAT5/6 cables with many switches / repeaters in line. This means a VMS installer can run CAT5 instead of fibre over long cable-runs to achieve communication with a remote VMS.

Industrial Ethernet switches
If a VMS sign is to be connected by Ethernet, a switch with a fibre-optic port can be used to achieve a noise-free, long distance link to a remote camera. Amplicon provide many Industrial Ethernet switches for this purpose.

Serial to Ethernet converters
Some legacy VMS products use a serial (RS232, RS422 or RS485) interface for communication. To make communication with such signs much more straightforward, a Serial to Ethernet converter can be used to effectively make the sign an IP addressable device. This means legacy signs can continue to be used even when the communication backbone is upgraded to Ethernet. Amplicon have a huge range of Serial to Ethernet converters from the lowest cost to the highest specification.

3G routers
To allow complete flexibility in the deployment of VMS signs, 3G routers can be used to provide a point to point IP connection to another router or to a central control room via the internet. This means high bandwidth communications can be maintained with a VMS sign allowing over the air reprogramming whenever necessary.
More details on the type of cellular systems that can be built with our products and an overview of how it goes together can be found here.
