09.12.2009 An RS232 cable the length and breadth of the globe!

The newly released G3111 from Amplicon is an intelligent IP modem providing customers with a simple method of connecting to serial devices anywhere in the world. The innovative +lsquo;Reverse Real COM mode of operation overcomes the classic connectivity problems inherent in cellular networks making global GPRS connections easier than ever before. The G3111 (RS232 only) and the G3151 (RS232/422/485 selectable) are a new generation of Intelligent modems that behave like Serial to Ethernet converters with a GPRS network interface instead of the customary 10/100Mbps Ethernet interface. Support for Virtual COM mode of operation makes integration very easy with the physical serial ports appearing as COM ports in a PCs Operating System. GPRS configuration can be complicated the first time it is attempted which is why Amplicon has invested in demo stock technical videos and SIM cards with static IP addresses +ndash; all freely accessible to make the customers experience as straightforward as possible. The products have a quad-band GSM/GPRS engine allowing them to be used all around the world and feature a 10/100Mbps Ethernet interface to make configuration easy. The hardened metal enclosure allows the units to be panel or DIN-rail mounted for professional installation. The operating temperature of -30 to +55+deg;C and 12 to 48Vdc power input provide a great deal of flexibility for installers. A 5 year warranty and a list price of less than +pound;250 makes these products an attractive proposition for system integrators and OEMs working with serial devices such as weighing scales PLCs scanners displays and sensors. David Evans Product Development manager at Amplicon commented: There always needs to be a very compelling business case to generate a change in the way that customers build their systems. The ease of implementation and low price of the G3100 series combined with improved GPRS coverage and greater understanding of cellular systems means that we have a very bright future with these products. Financial savings on site visits to equipment for maintenance or reprogramming will offset deployment costs of a cellular system in a very short period of time.+rdquo;

30.11.2009 Why are Amplicon selling NAS?

Industrial computing and networking specialists Amplicon have signed a distribution agreement with QNAP +ndash; one of Taiwans fastest growing NAS storage manufacturers. The deal is designed to enhance Amplicon+ s portfolio of Industrial IT products and provide customers with more choice when considering a total solution from Amplicon.David Evans Product Development Manager at Amplicon identifies the strategic thinking that underpins the move:Market - According to market research specialists Gartner the low cost NAS market grew by 64% in 2008. Customer feedback particularly from the security military and broadcast sectors also point to increased requirements for NAS for high bandwidth video storage and encrypted data storage.Product positioning +ndash; The QNAP range of products occupy a unique space in the NAS market. Features such as iSCSI AES encryption redundant power supplies and extensive RAID capabilities position the products way above their very affordable price point.Technology - There has been a major trend over the last decade for IT methodologies to be adopted in the industrial sector. PCs Ethernet and TCP/IP are becoming the de facto technologies for industrial automation and NAS is the logical next step.Value add +ndash; For Amplicon the addition of NAS is not about shifting boxes. As experts in Industrial computing and networking we can provide a complete solution and explain the benefits of NAS to customers in the industrial sector that may never have considered it before.The QNAP range runs from low cost solutions for the SOHO market through to high capacity rackmount NAS boxes with redundant PSUs for mission-critical data storage applications. All new lines will be launched at Amplicon by the end of October 2009.Shawn Shu VP of Sales and Marketing at QNAP commented: We are delighted to have Amplicon as a value add distributor and integrator in the UK. Their long history in the industrial market gives QNAP access to high-profile customers that many of our IT resellers cannot typically reach.+rdquo;For further details please visit: http://www.amplicon.com/IPC/product/NAS-4003.cfm

20.11.2009 Daisy chaining Ethernet I/O cuts costs in remote monitoring

Amplicons new Ethernet I/O range delivers major cost savings to customers that want to monitor and control devices over an IP network. The Moxa ioLogik E1200 series have an Ethernet switch built-in and are priced as one of the most cost-effective new ranges of Remote I/O products on the market today. Engineers that have used RS485 wiring on serial networks are familiar with daisy chain connections between remote I/O devices but Ethernet I/O typically requires one or more switches to build a network. The inclusion of a built-in switch in the ioLogik E1200 series removes a significant additional expense and keeps wiring schemes very simple. Suitable for new or existing installations the ioLogik E1200 series feature user defined Modbus TCP/IP addressing for easy replacement of existing devices. They also include support for the unique Active OPC server software which is available free of charge for up to 250 tags. The following variants are now available: ioLogik E1210 - 16 digital input channelsioLogik E1211 - 16 digital output channelsioLogik E1212 - 8 digital inputs and 8 digital outputsioLogik E1214 - 6 digital inputs and 6 relays ioLogik E1240 - 8 analogue inputs John Hayward Product Manager for Measurement and Control at Amplicon commented: In a market populated with products that offer little to distinguish one from another the new ioLogik E1200 series delivers a step change in functionality. The inclusion of an integral Ethernet switch makes installation much easier and significantly reduces the total project cost.+rdquo; For further details please visit: http://www.amplicon.com/mandc/product/Remote-Distributed-ioLogik-4020.cfm

19.10.2009 Amplicon are first to sell ‘London’!

Amplicons Data Communications Group has recently sold the very first 6KL Industrial Ethernet switch in Europe. The 6KL codenamed London is Garrettcoms most competitive Industrial Ethernet switch ever and a sign that truly rugged Industrial Ethernet products are now even more affordable.The 6KL is one of the lowest cost modular Industrial Ethernet switches available on the market. Modularity means system integrators and OEMs can settle on one style of switch for a wide variety of applications keeping installer training and spares provision simple and cost-effective. The compact 6KL base unit comes as standard with four 10/100 copper ports which can be specified as either regular or Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports. Users can add up to four 100Mb fibre ports (for either singlemode or multimode operation) or up to four additional 10/100 copper ports (which again can be PoE ports) or combinations of the two. In addition to these 8 ports users can specify up to two gigabit (Gb) ports configured either as SFP ports or as 10/100/1000 copper ports.David Evans Product Development Manager at Amplicon commented:Garrettcom have always been synonymous with quality but have not always met the right price point for cost-sensitive applications in the building controls or security markets. As Garrettcoms premier distributor in the UK the 6KL gives us a truly industrial grade product that is not only flexible but lists at a very attractive price.+rdquo;

14.09.2009 Green computing with Amplicon’s ATOM PC

Amplicon have recently launched the Impact-E 30 series of ATOM based embedded computers adding new innovation to Amplicons existing Industrial PC range. Features of the Impact-E 30 series include:Extremely low power only 11W (idle) with Windows XP installed Capable of operating in temperatures from -20 to +50+deg;C Very rugged design with industrial grade power supply and chassis 6 x COM ports and Dual gigabit LAN as standardPCI and PCI Express expansion slots for 3rd party plug-in cards The Impact-E 30 series are next generation embedded computer systems that utilise the ATOM N270 processor to achieve high performance at very low power consumption +ndash; typically around 11W with Windows XP Professional installed. With such low power requirements it is feasible to power these systems from a solar panel or battery.The total energy saving of Amplicons ATOM solution in large roll-outs can be huge compared with typical consumption of a Core 2 Duo system +ndash; this means reduced costs for the end user and green kudos for the system integrator or OEM.The other key feature facilitated by an ATOM processor is the wide -20 to +50+deg;C operating temperature making in-vehicle and roadside or trackside applications a possibility. Most PCs capable of running Windows XP cannot achieve such wide temperature ranges making the Impact-E30/35 especially appealing for military projects. Impact-E 30 has a PCI expansion slot and Impact-E 35 has a PCI Express expansion slot allowing 3rd party cards to be added to the system. Both products have a rugged fanlessdesign with dual Gigabit LAN 4 x RS232 2 x RS232/422/485 selectable and 6 x USB 2.0 ports. The units also have dual video output with 1 x VGA and 1 x DVI-D as well as 8 x digital I/O lines onboard. Early prototype orders for the system will see the Impact-E 30 employed in power monitoring and digital signage applications with interest also emerging from rail integrators and military customers. David Evans Product Development Manager at Amplicon comments:We have witnessed a great rush over the last year for Industrial PC suppliers to get an ATOM based computer to market. Although we are not first to market the additional time has allowed us to deliver an impressive product at an exceptional price.We are confident that customers will be delighted by the build quality and technical features of this industrial product and amazed when they find that prices start at under +pound;500 for volume orders.+rdquo; For further details please visit: http://www.amplicon.co.uk/IPC/product/Embedded-Rugged-Impact-E-3979.cfm

18.08.2009 Amplicon to host FREE Emerging technologies seminar

Always happy to dispel the myth that there is no such thing as a free lunch Amplicon will be hosting a free seminar at their Brighton HQ on 23rd September 2009. The content has been devised based on current and future trends in +lsquo;Automation. The day is designed to give system integrators solution providers and OEMs a critical insight into technologies such as Industrial Ethernet 3G Cellular communications solid state storage and many other emerging technologies.The event marks the launch of the +lsquo;Universal Architecture from Amplicon +ndash; a vision of how all future automation systems will be built regardless of the vertical market.+lsquo;Universal Architecture recognises the major trend of using Industrial Ethernet for communication and Industrial computers for data processing / visualisation as the core building blocks for industrial systems. The current trend in industry mirrors developments in the IT market 25 years ago when PCs Ethernet and TCP/IP emerged as the de facto technologies for office automation.Subjects covered in the seminar which are at the heart of the +lsquo;Universal Architecture are:Cellular (3G / GPRS) routers - provide cable-free access to the internet and to other remote sites.Serial to Ethernet converters - allow legacy RS232/422/485 devices to be used in an IP based network.Industrial Ethernet - the network infrastructure achieved through the deployment of Industrial Ethernet switches.Industrial computers - the data processing and visualisation +lsquo;brains of the system.Remote I/O modules +ndash; facilitates the communication of digital and analogue signals from a myriad of sensors across an IP network.David Evans Product Development Manager at Amplicon comments:There is a silent revolution in Industrial Automation at the moment and whilst some of our customers have embraced critical new technologies many more are unaware of all the options available to them. We would encourage anyone in the field of +lsquo;automation to register for this seminar as they can be guaranteed to leave with innovative new ideas!+rdquo; For further details and registration please visit: http://www.amplicon.co.uk/campaigns/emerg-tech-agenda.cfm

22.07.2009 Amplicon launches unique ‘Test Systems’ service

Amplicons new Test Systems Division has been developed to provide system integrators and end-users with the widest range of test system hardware at a price that only a manufacturer and tier 1 distributor can offer. PXI Compact PCI (cPCI) LXI and PC-based systems along with an extensive product integration service provides customers with a finished hardware platform allowing them to concentrate on their specific area of expertise +ndash; typically the addition of a bespoke test software application. Test Systems Product Manager John Hayward comments:We have manufactured the components for Test Systems such as Industrial PCs and data acquisition boards for many years. Despite the decline in UK and European manufacturing we have found substantial demand for the supply of integrated hardware test solutions and we are now responding to that demand.+rdquo; He continues: In a recent application Amplicons PC based test system provided a saving of over +pound;100 000 compared to in-house development at a major oil and gas instrumentation specialist. It is our position as a manufacturer and Tier 1 distributor that allows us to supply very cost competitive solutions. Our major challenge now is to communicate this capability to a fractious and un-ordered market.+rdquo; In the current trend of out-sourcing non-critical functions many companies have reduced knowledge and manpower for implementing new test systems and upgrading existing lines.Power calculations for PC power supply + UPS specifications; selection of appropriate signal conditioning for connection to the myriad sensors and transducers in the market; data transfer limitations of system busses such as PCI and VXI and advanced triggering and synchronisation for time-dependent measurements need to be considered when designing a suitable test system solution. Amplicons CEO Gina Citroni comments: By providing free technical consultancy and exceptional prices for our test systems Amplicon hope to do our bit to help keep UK manufacturing alive!+rdquo;For further details please visit: http://www.amplicon.co.uk/Test-Systems

15.07.2009 A Sexy Cellular Solution from Amplicon

The new ioLogik W5340 Active Ethernet I/O module uses quad band GPRS for communication over the mobile telephone network from anywhere in the world. It can monitor both analogue and digital signals from instruments and switches whilst control is provided by relays or digital outputs. I/O can be controlled remotely by any SCADA system using Modbus TCP or OPC. The W5340 uses Active messaging to send alarms or other messages when water levels or similar limits are exceeded. Click +lsquo;n Go+rdquo; logic provides local PLC-like control which could be particularly useful if and when the local GPRS signal is lost.John Hayward Product Manager for Measurement and Control at Amplicon commented: The combination of Active remote I/O and a GPRS router in one package will enable our customers to save purchase costs and reduce cabinet size. It is a very innovative product with an in-built solution for dealing with SIM cards that only have a private static IP address.+rdquo;Modern cellular networks have a high level of reliability but are not infallible. Because of this the W5340 has a built in SD card than can store up to 14 days worth of readings should the wireless network fail. Once the link is restored data can continue to be streamed from the unit. For further details please click here
