Many industrial sites have low grade twisted pair cabling in place, originally installed to support RS422 or RS485 based control and monitoring systems. With the rapid transition to Ethernet based communications, many companies are incurring the cost of replacing RS485 cabling and replacing it with CAT 5/6 infrastructure - however, this may not be necessary!

The NPort 6000 series device servers feature PPP mode which can be used to allow TCP/IP based Ethernet data to be transmitted over existing runs of serial cable up to 1.2km saving the cost of new cable installation and allowing Ethernet to effectively exceed the 100m distance limit. Most new waveform generators now come with USB or Ethernet ports for connection to a computer or test system. However their primary location is on a bench-top so they also include user friendly buttons and displays.

When building an Automated Test system there is generally no need for manual control or display since software automates the test procedure and a monitor provides the display.
