MEDIA GALLERY - FACT FILM, ART AND CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY
FACT, the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology is the UK's leading organisation for commissioning, exhibiting, promoting and supporting artists' work and innovation in the fields of film, video, and new media. FACT believe in the ability of individuals and communities to express themselves creatively, and work with international artists to develop exhibitions, increase knowledge about new technologies and to create new commissions with people living and working in Liverpool.
Systems Requirements and solution
Visitors to the interactive arts and media centre in Liverpool were to be televised live for public viewing as a means of art. The £10 million centre, designed by award-winning architects Austin-Smith: Lord, is Liverpool's first purpose-built cultural project for over 60 years and seeks to bring technology and art closer together for the benefit of the public.
Situated in the centre's main foyer, the Orientation Wall houses 14 LCD screens designed in custom-made, brushed stainless steel enclosures. While the Wall's lower tier of seven 18" monitors display live gallery and cinema programme information, an upper tier of seven 15" screens carry a collage of live images featuring events and visitors captured by CCTV cameras located throughout the building. The LCD screens were modified Prolite II displays offering an IP65 rated facia, robust, metal case construction designed for harsh environment user interfaces. We have metal case, open frame and panel mount options.
Pro-Lite II series
The Pro-Lite II series comprises of robust, metal case contruction and IP65 rated front panel industrial monitors.
For processing power we utilised the Amplicon range of Impact-E embedded computers, the rugged and compact design makes these computers ideally suited to a variety of space-critical applications. Manufactured from selected high quality industrial components, the Impact-E embedded computer range provide an ideal cost-effective solution for use in harsh environments and critical 24/7 operations.
the results
The exhibition was a success and out performed expectations. "We are extremely pleased with the contribution that Amplicon has made to this project", comments Clive Gillman, Lead Artist and Associate Director for FACT. "It underlines their ability to customise product technology in a way that fully meets specification requirements and we are now talking with them about several other collaborative ventures for the future".
Why Amplicon
Although not a typical client for Amplicon it was quickly recognised that Amplicon could supply a robust and reliable solution. For this case, simple commercial hardware could not be relied upon.
