CompactPCI is a rugged industrial computer design, developed by the PICMG user group. It uses standard computer technology such as Windows and the PCI bus, but with the front loading Eurocard form factor popularised by the VME bus.
CompactPCI (cPCI) peripheral cards are installed vertically for improved cooling, and have positive card retention for excellent shock and vibration characteristics.
Connectors for input / output signals are typically provided at the front of the system for easy wiring, but may also be provided at the rear if required.
This design makes CompactPCI based systems ideal for use in applications requiring rugged, high reliability solutions such as Aerospace, military, telecoms and transport.
