Many Passenger Information Display (PID) systems must be located in harsh locations where environmental conditions can be prohibitive for standard electronic equipment to be used. In bus and train stations especially, displays and ticketing machines have to be sited a long way from the air-conditioned central control room.
A major UK display specialist faced just this problem when having to locate PID systems in an outdoor environment. To communicate with the system over several hundred metres of fibre, Amplicon's model 14EH hardened Ethernet media converter was chosen to provide a suitable fibre-optic interface.
The diagram below shows the setup of the remote display system:
Many hundreds of Model 14 media converters have been sold into PID applications with reliability and continuity of supply key to their success in this system.
