Media converters seamlessly convert between fibre optic Ethernet and copper Ethernet connections. Using fibre optics provides 3 key benefits:
1) Distance - copper Ethernet is limited to 100m range. Fibre-optic links can extend up to 120km!
2) Noise immunity - Ethernet communications can be disrupted in electrically noisy environments if standard Cat 5 / Cat 6 cabling is used.
Fibre based communications are unaffected by electrical noise and as such are a much better choice for industrial installations.
3) Security - Unlike a copper cable there is no radiated signal outside a fibre optic link. For this reason, fibre is sometimes used to prevent security breaches in military and other sensitive applications.
Amplicon also supply a 10Base2 to 10BaseT converter for connecting legacy co-axial based systems to twisted pair networks.
